Dental implants are a permanent replacement for a missing tooth, multiple teeth, or in some cases all of your teeth. They do not distress the surrounding teeth and look, feel, and function normally.
The tooth root is made of titanium and is implanted directly into the jawbone. It is then covered with a porcelain crown that is custom-made to fit over the top. This concept is depicted in the diagram shown to the right.
There are two main steps in placing an implant, the surgery and the restorative aspect. First, the small titanium shaft is surgically drilled into place. The shaft sets over time by a process called osseointegration, where the bone grows around it. When the area has healed and is firmly set in the mouth, it is time for the second step. Dr. Roper or Dr. McLaws will then adhere the replacement tooth onto the root form. When the process is complete, nobody will be able to tell you have an artificial tooth.
When you are missing many teeth, dental implants have many advantages. They are strong, durable, and are considered a permanent solution. Dentures are an attractive option for many patients since they are less expensive. Although, when you don't have any teeth, your body begins to dissolve the bone. Your face can become sunken in, a condition called facial collapse. Dental implants avoid this serious concern due to the bond that is formed when the root is implanted into the bone. The bone tissue grows around the root to support it preventing bone loss. To learn more, please visit the facial collapse page.
Multiple implants can be placed when there are several teeth missing. These replacement teeth are more comfortable than removable devices and much more convenient. You don't have to worry about the embarrassment of removing them for cleaning, chewing, or sleeping. Depending on the stability you desire from your new teeth, we can use as little as two implants to secure a full arch of teeth. Or we can install an implant on every tooth. Together, we can determine the best course of action to fit your lifestyle. To be a candidate, you should be in good general health. Otherwise special considerations can be discussed.
