Patients enjoy the convenience and trust built over time that comes from having one dentist treat the entire family. Our dentists both have kids of their own and truly enjoy seeing children.
A pediatric dentist is a specialist that is licensed in the diagnosis and treatment of dental problems for children. An additional two years of training is required for this specialty. We are considered general dentists, not pediatric dentists.
We are trained to provide all the basic dental care that children need, which encompasses anything most children require. In the unlikely event that we do encounter a clinical situation with your child that is beyond our training, we will certainly refer your child to a pediatric dentist specialist.
Going to the dentist can be fun. So many parents have had negative dental experiences as a kid. We invite you to bring your child into the office before the age of three years old. We have even seen kids as early as one year of age. We call the first trip to the dentist, a happy visit. Your child can expect a chair ride and can watch a movie while we take a look at their teeth. We will count their teeth and if they are willing we can polish their teeth. When it's all over, they get to select a balloon or sticker to take home. We encourage you not to over prepare for their visit. Often times your nervousness can transfer over to your child creating uncertainty and worry.
• Begin cleaning your child's teeth as soon as they erupt in
the mouth. Use a damp cloth to start and when they
have fully come in, begin using a soft toothbrush.
• Find a dentist that your child likes and makes an extra
effort to be gentle.
• Set a good example with brushing your teeth. Talk to
them about it and start brushing their teeth for them.
When they are able to better understand and hold the
toothbrush, they can take over.
• Flossing is important to begin at an early age. Around the
age of two or three, they will get their baby molars. Floss
between each tooth for them. It will likely be many years
before they can do this on their own, around the age of
eight.
• Don't wait until it's too late! The last thing we want is for
your child to associate going to the dentist with pain.
Fun and comfortable routine visits early on, pave the way
for positive dental care as they get older.
